Wakeham

It was a day spent in the garden, cutting the lawn and lots of weeding which wasn't surprising considering the amount of rain we have had lately.

Main highlight when I took a break, was watching at least 6 Palmate Newts in the pond, with a few males displaying to the females. Also in the pond a Common Frog. Under the corrugated sheet a Slow-worm with a stumpy tail.

Just one butterfly seen a Small White and a Mint Moth landed briefly on one of the Buddleia but flew off before I could photograph it.

A few bees seen with just singles of Honey Bee, Red-tailed Bumblebee, Buff-tailed Bumblebee, Ashy Mining Bee, Grey-patched Mining Bee and Yellow-legged Mining Bees

Just two hoverflies seen, both Spotted Meliscaeva (Meliscaeva auricollis)

Here are a few images and a video from today:

At least 2 Herring Gull chicks have hatched in between the neighbours chimney pots.

Not one I have seen under the corrugated metal sheet before, a Slow-worm with a stumpy tail.

Well I had a surprise today. Having not seen any Palmate Newts for awhile now, today there were at least 6, with a few males interacting with the females.

One of the male Palmate Newts

Here another male is displaying to a female to the right.

And keeping out of the way of all the newts was this Frog. I'm sure there were a few others close by.

My first thought was that this might be Cliff Mining Bee (Andrena thoracica) which I came across in the garden last June. However I'm pretty sure it is the very similar looking Grey-patched Mining Bee (Andrena nitida)

With those yellow legs you would be forgiven in thinking this is a Yellow-legged Mining Bee (Andrena flavipe), but the very small size and shape means it's a Southern Bronze Furrow Bee (Halictus tumulorum)

One of two Spotted Meliscaeva (Meliscaeva auricollis) in the garden this afternoon. And the only hoverflies seen.

I'm not saying it is, but the closest Muscidae fly I can ID this as, is a Helina abdominalis

Oh dear I don't think having a 100 foot long garden does it for Ted.
