Wakeham

Happy New Year to you all, especially Don and Ed, who visited my Blog just about every day last year. Thank you

My walk today will appear on here later.

Lower Horse Paddock, Bumpers Lane, Rufus Castle and Portland Museum

Well what a great start to 2021with the following birds recorded on my first walk of the year. The 29 species were: Gannet, 1 Great White Egret, Kestrel, Oystercatcher, Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Razorbill, Guillemot, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Feral Pigeon, 15 Meadow Pipit, 3 Pied Wagtail, Dunnock, Robin, 2 Stonechat, Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush, Long-tailed Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Wren, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, Starling, House Sparrow, Chaffinch and Goldfinch.

However the highlight was watching a Great White Egret making its way down Portland's east coast. I did ring Martin Cade at the Portland Bird Observatory, but it didn't make it down there. Possibly it landed in the Top Fields or was simply doing a circuit of the island before heading back to the mainland.

Other than the expected birds, it was good to see that the pair of Stonechats were still in the Lower Horse Paddock.

Here are a few images and videos from today:

A great start to the year with this Great White Egret making its way south down Portland's east coast. This is my first one for Portland, all the others have been at Radipole and Lodmoor.

This male Stonechat was finding plenty of food in the Lower Horse paddock........

.......and was proving difficult to follow as well.

This is the female Stonechat in the allotments adjacent to the Horse paddock.

I was really surprised as to how close I was able to get to this Song Thrush. They are such shy birds, so it was nice to see one fairly close up.

As long as they can keep finding food in the paddock I think the 15 Meadow Pipits will be here for quite sometime.

And who else but Ted flying through the air again. Go Ted go.

I'm convinced he thinks he's a mountain dog.
