Wakeham Railway Cuttings, Perryfields Butterfly Reserve, Church Ope Car Park, Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church, Church Ope Cove, Church Ope Cove Wood and Wakeham Wood

Another lovely day, but it is getting harder and harder to find anything of real interest. Even the large flock of Long-tailed Tits seem to have vanished. All that is around at the moment are two small parties of around 8 and 5 at Penns Wood and Wakeham Railway Cuttings respectively.

At least the Firecrests are putting in a good appearance with 2 in Penns Wood, where there were also 2 Chiffchaffs, and there were 2 more Firecrests at the back of the cove with just 1 Chiffchaff putting in an appearance here.

I spent a lot of time along the railway cuttings in search of the "Eastern" Lesser Whitethroat seen there yesterday. Sadly it is very elusive and I think it will be a case of being at the right place at the right time, if I'm going to see it again.

On the beach there were just 4 Rock Pipits, but there are one or two Wrens now starting to appear. The latter in and out of the boulders & large pebbles in search of any insects lurking about.

Other birds of interest were a Siskin and Sparrowhawk over Penns Wood, and 2 Ravens and a Kestrel over the cove

Here are a few images from today:

A Kestrel over Church Ope Cove.

On the beach just 4 Rock Pipits. In fact I couldn't find a single Kelp Fly, which might explain the low number.

A sad sight as it looks very much like an angler has caught and killed this small Dogfish and then left it on the beach. As an angler of 50 years plus I just cannot understand the mentality of some people. I know a lot of people will say that angling is pointless and cruel etc. etc. but I have only ever taken a few fish for the table and returned those I didn't want. In fact I have also returned many fish to fight another day that were either inedible, out of season or undersized. Rant over!!

Sorry another photo of a German Wasp leaving its nest site in the grounds of St Andrew's Church, where this............
