Out and About

On a wet miserable morning there was a Stonechat at the top of New Road, on the edge of Tout Quarry. In the grounds of the Gatehouse Medical Centre there was a Chiffchaff and a Goldcrest.

Wakeham Railway Cuttings, Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church, Church Ope Cove and Church Ope Cove Wood

This afternoon I had to wait for the rain to stop before venturing out, but even then there were a few light showers that passed through. The birding has definitely dropped off and the only highlights today were 2 Firecrests, 2 Goldcrests and a Blackcap in Penns Wood.

Even the beach was eerily quiet with just a Grey Wagtail and a Wren seen. I did hear a couple of Rock Pipits, but I think they were leaving as I arrived at the beach.

On the way home a Kestrel was sat on a house on the other side of the road from the cottage and then right out of the blue it flew low across the road and caught an insect by the doorway of my neighbours house. He had a quick munch, then a look to see if there was anything else to eat before taking off and away up the street. And all of this just feet away from where Ted and I were standing.

Here are a few images from today:

And here is the Kestrel on the other side of the street eyeing up a "bug" just a few feet from where Ted and I were standing.

Next second he was on the pavement in front of us and catching its "prey".

Having dispatched his meal it was quick look to see if there was anything else to eat, before flying off.

A Girdled Snail (Hygromia cinctella)

Possibly a Phaonia pallida. The reason I'm not 100% certain is that this is slightly small for an Orange Muscid Fly.

St Aldhelm's Head viewed from Church Ope Cove. You can just make out 3 sets of buildings on the headland with the chapel in the centre. There is a better shot of this headland taken on 8 Nov 17 Here.
