Another day in the garden, which for a change wasn't spent sitting around as the lawn and borders needed sorting out. But having finished, it was a good day weather-wise to chill out in the sun. In fact it was even warmer than yesterday with the temperature reaching 18.7°C on the outdoor thermometer, and that was in the shade.
Main highlight today was a Hobby which I just happened to see bombing across the Building Site behind the cottage. A few seconds later it was over the garden and gone. Incredible speed. A garden lockdown tick which is now on 45 and it was also a first for the year.
There was another Common Whitethroat today and a bit closer to the garden, singing in the hedgerow adjacent to the Lower Horse Paddock.
Some new additions to my garden invertebrates list were a Yellow-faced Bell moth, a male Swollen-thighed Beetle and a Curled Rose Sawfly (Allantus cinctus). The latter a new species for my Portland List.
I also have a few I need to ID later: another sawfly, a possible Clay Moth caterpillar and a leafhopper. A job for tomorrow.
My Lockdown Garden List is Here.
The pond is certainly the centre of the wildlife here in the garden and with many insects around, that is probably why the Palmate Newts are doing well.
Another attempt at photographing the Blackbird leaving the nest.
Not a bad effort considering I can't get anymore than 1/2000 second on my camera.
And one of the local Collared Doves in the Sycamore behind the garden
And if I have got this right this is a Plum Tortrix, Hedya pruniana, and another moth for the Garden Lockdown List. However and a big thank you to my friend Ed Wilson, this is actually a Yellow-faced Bell (Notocelia cynobatella)
An Ashy Mining Bee (Andrena cineraria)
And here it is having wash and brush up
A Lathbury's Nomad Bee (Nomada lathburiana) and.............
...........two more.
A couple of Sawflies.
Here is the larger one which.......
.........is a Curled Rose Sawfly (Allantus cinctus) and a new one for my Portland List as well as the garden.
Another Sawfly sp.
As above
Another Sawfly possibly the same species as above. Unfortunately there is no way of identifying these just by a photo.
Narcissus Bulb Fly (Merodon equestris)
And my attempt of capturing it in flight.
I came across two Hairy Shieldbug (Dolycoris baccarum) on the Valerian and...........
...........three Common Green Shieldbug (Palomena prasina)
Well this bug is a member of the Cicadellidae Family. But as to which species, I dont think pinning it down is going likely. More on Cicadellidae Here.
And a male Swollen-thighed Beetle (Oedemera nobilis)
Spot the Dog. Ted loves his mountaineering......
..........and was very determined to get out of the garden.
Eventually he made his way back to path, without falling into the pond and then tried to get through the fence. I suspect the neighbours cat was close-by.
