Avalanche Hump

News was out this afternoon, that there were 2 Red-breasted Flycatchers around the hump. So it was off to see if they were still about. I managed one, but there was no sign of the second bird. Also here a Yellow-browed Warbler calling from the Sycamores.

Unfortunately the light was very poor, but I just managed to video this Red-breasted Flycatcher albeit slightly out of focus.

And a still from another video I took.

Wakeham Wood, Wakeham Railway Cuttings, Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church, Church Ope Cove, Penns Weare, Penns Copse, Rufus Castle and Portland Museum.

The very wet and depressing weather continues and there was very little let up this morning. I thought I had found a break in the weather for my morning walk, but that was short-lived as the intense drizzle returned.

At least the bird watching wasn't too bad and I managed a few migrants. Here is a break down of what I found:

Wakeham Wood: 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap and 3 Goldcrest. Whilst overhead there were 50+ Meadow Pipits, 7+ Pied Wagtails, 200+ Linnets, 12+ Goldfinch, 2 Greenfinch, 1 Siskin and a Peregrine Falcon

Wakeham Railway Cuttings: 1 Goldcrest

Penns Wood: 1 Goldcrest and 2 Song Thrush

St Andrew's Church
: 1 Goldcrest and 2 Sparrowhawks

Church Ope Cove: 3 Rock Pipits on the beach. Out to sea 2 Cormorants and several Gannets. Whilst overhead 2 Ravens, with one bird being "buzzed" several times by a Peregrine. Also more Pied Wagtails and a Grey Wagtail heading south.

Church Ope Cove Woods: 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap and a Goldcrest

Penns Copse: 1 Goldcrest

Also noted was a Red Admiral in Wakeham Wood and a new wasp nest behind the huts at Church Ope Cove. This time the nest of Common Wasps (Vespula vulgaris)

Here are a few images from this morning:

On the beach today just 3 Rock Pipits

I'm surprised there weren't more especially with so many Kelp Flies flying about.

This Peregrine Falcon was "buzzing" this Raven several times. I have seen this before and I dont think this is an act of aggression, but more of an opportunity for the falcon to practice its "attack" skills. There again it could be that it was pretty annoyed at the Raven and was seeing it off!! There was also a second Raven in this video, which decided to land on the cliff and keep out of the way.

A Goldcrest on Penns Copse

A new wasp nest for me today and this time Common Wasps (Vespula vulgaris).................

..........and a busy one as well, with lots of workers coming in and out.

It has been confirmed that the snails I found yesterday are Helicella itala. Aka Heath Snails.

A One Pence coin just to show you how small they are.

A new plant for me today, a fern. which turns out to be a Common Polypody (Polypodium vulgare)
