Another day of sunshine, strong winds and heavy showers, and it was really difficult trying to find any birds of note. In fact this is the first day since 7 September that there haven't been any Chiffchaffs in Wakeham Wood.
Here are my efforts this morning:
Wakeham Wood: 1 Goldcrest
Wakeham Railway Cuttings: 1 Chiffchaff and 1 Goldcrest
St Andrew's Church: 1 Chiffchaff and a small flock of Long-tailed Tits
Church Ope Cove: 17 Rock Pipits and out to sea 2 Gannets.
Church Ope Cove Wood: 1 Chiffchaff
Just 2 butterflies today, 2 Red Admirals in the shelter of St Andrews Church.
Here are a few images and a video from this morning:
I was thinking this might be Sea Cabbage under the cliffs at Church Ope Cove. But looking online I can see that it isn't. Maybe Sea Beet (Beta vulgaris maritima)
High up in this tree behind the beach huts, was this strange orange "blob". Not one I've come across before, but I'm pretty sure this is Yellow Brain Fungus (Tremella mesenterica). More on this fungi Here.
Ted (sporting his new waterproof jacket) has found a new friend. This is Shambho and on a long walk with Lewis his owner. Hope you both dried out after the downpour we had.
Birds Recorded: 2 Gannet, Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Wood Pigeon, 17 Rock Pipit, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Goldcrest, Long-tailed Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Wren, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, House Sparrow and Chaffinch
Butterflies Recorded: 2 Red Admiral
Wasps Recorded: German Wasp (Vespula germanica) and Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris)
Hoverflies Recorded: Dead Head Hoverfly (Myathropa florea) and Common Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax)
Flies Recorded: Kelp Fly (Coelopa frigida)

There was no escape from the showers today
It didn't matter which way you looked.......
...........they were all around us.
On the beach just 17 Rock Pipits.
There was also a distinct lack of Kelp Flies. All taking shelter no doubt.
One of the 2 Red Admirals in the sheltered church grounds.
A lone Dead Head Hoverfly. The only other hoverfly seen was a Common Drone Fly.
Behind the cove the Common Wasp nest and........
..........for comparison the German Wasp nest in the church grounds.
In Penns Wood a Harlequin Ladybird form succinea
And the form spectabilis

Ships Today
Believe it or not there is a ship on the horizon.
Believe it or not there is a ship on the horizon.
After a bit of photo enhancement you can just make it out. This is the Liberian Container Ship "Monaco" on its way from Le Havre to Sines, Portugal. Judging by its route, it could well be heading into UK waters for shelter!!. More on this vessel Here.
