Wakeham Wood, Bottom Combe Quarry, Wakeham Railway Cuttings, Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church, Church Ope Cove, Rufus Castle and Portland Museum

A distinct chill in the air with a light northerly blowing down the island, but at least the sun was out.

Here are few highlights:

Wakeham Wood: 4 Chiffchaff (1 singing) and 3 Blackcap

Bottom Combe Quarry: 5 Chiffchaff (1 singing), 1 Blackcap, 1 Song Thrush and 2 Ravens over.

Wakeham Railway Cuttings: 1 Chiffchaff, 3 Blackcap and a Skylark & Grey Wagtail overhead.

Penns Wood: 2 Goldcrests

Church Ope Cove: 2 Chiffchaff (1 singing) and 5 Rock Pipits

A few Swallows passed overhead at various locations, whilst at Church Ope Cove there were also 2 House Martins.

2 Ravens over Wakeham Wood. You always hear them first!!!

The German Wasps in the wall at St Andrew's Church. So busy.

An Ivy Bee, this one and many more on the way up the steps to Rufus Castle.

The sun brought out a few Wall Lizards today. This one at Rufus Castle.

Birds Recorded: Herring Gull, Wood Pigeon, 2 House Martin, 12+ Swallow, 20+ Meadow Pipit, 5 Rock Pipit, 5 Pied Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, 1 Song Thrush, 7 Blackcap, 12 Chiffchaff, 2 Goldcrest, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Wren, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, 2 Raven, House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Linnet and Goldfinch

Reptiles Recorded: Wall Lizard (Podarcis muralis)

Butterflies Recorded: 3 Red Admiral

Bees Recorded: Honey Bees (Apis mellifera) and Ivy Bee (Colletes hederae)

Wasps Recorded: German Wasp (Vespula germanica) and Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris)

Hoverflies Recorded: Dead Head Hoverfly (Myathropa florea), Common Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax) and Tapered Drone Fly (Eristalis pertinax)

Flies Recorded: Kelp Fly (Coelopa frigida)

Bugs and Beetles Recorded: 6 Harlequin Ladybird (Harmonia axyridis, form - succinea)


Portland Harbour, Balaclava Bay and Weymouth Bay

Out in the boat this afternoon. No fish but the bird watching was good with the following highlights being: Cormorant, Shag, 2 Grey Heron, Oystercatcher, 3 Dunlin, 12 Turnstone, 1 Little Gull, 5 Mediterranean Gull, Herring Gull, 40+ Great Black-backed Gull, Meadow PipitRock Pipit and 5 Pied Wagtail

Also noted was a single Red Admiral and another Western Conifer Seed Bug (Leptoglossus occidentalis). The first and last one was also on the boat on 1 Sep 19 Here.

On the way out of Portland marina a Grey Heron on the breakwater.

Also here 4 Oystercatchers.

And my second ever Western Conifer Seed Bug.

I think this could be the British sailing vessel "Galene" on its way out of Portland Harbour to an unknown destination...............
