Seems I missed some good birds on my travels today with Yellow-browed Warblers at Wakeham and Church Ope Cove. A bit disappointing when you think I spent an hour at each location and didn't see or hear any. Maybe I need a visit to Specsavers and also some hearing aids at the same time!!
So what did I find:
Wakeham Wood: 3 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap, 2 Greenfinch and a Song Thrush. Overhead 3 Siskins.
Wakeham Railway Cutting: 2 Goldcrest
Church Ope Car Park: 2 Goldcrest
Penns Wood: 1 Chiffchaff and 2 Goldcrest
St Andrews Church grounds: 1 Chiffchaff
Church Ope Cove Woods: 1 Chiffchaff
Church Ope Cove: 31 Rock Pipits
Penns Weare: 7 Chiffchaffs, 4 Goldcrest, 5 Long-tailed Tits and a Stonechat. Overhead 1 Skylark, 1 Peregrine, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Buzzard and 1 Kestrel
East Weares: 12+ Chiffchaff, 4 Blackcap and 5 Goldcrest. On one of the pools near the beach was a Little Egret. And as I made my way up the side of Grove Cliffs I spooked a deer. A brief glimpse and I'm pretty sure it was a Roe Deer.
Shepherds Dinner: 15 Meadow Pipit and 15 Linnet
Broadcroft Pools: 1 Chiffchaff
Broadcroft Quarry Lane: 3 Chiffchaff
Lower Horse Paddocks: 1 Stonechat and a Pied Wagtail. Overhead 3 Swallows.
A few butterflies about with several Red Admirals, Large Whites and a Peacock.
Nearly every flowering Ivy has Ivy Bees on it. Good numbers of hoverflies as well.
Here are a few images from my walk:
A Blue Tit foraging in the hedgerow along the track at Wakeham wood.
Red Admiral
Harlequin Ladybird form conspicua
Harlequin Ladybird form spectabilis
Harlequin Ladybird form succinea
Harlequin Ladybird. Another form succinea
Harlequin Ladybird. And another form succinea, but a lighter orange.
Do you get a feeling there is a hierarchy amongst the Rock Pipits. He's certainly giving him a look!!!
In the centre of the frame - Church Ope Cove wood and had I stayed there a bit a longer who knows I might have seen/heard the Yellow-browed Warbler. There's always tomorrow.
Looking south along Penns Weare..........
...........where this Buzzard was on his favourite Rock again.
It has been a good year for Red Admirals, so it was nice to see a Peaccock for a change.
Still along Penns Weare and a Stonechat.
Up onto the old Railway Track and the trees and bushes along here were alive with Chiffchaffs.
As I made my way up to the Grove, I just happened to spot something white moving around in the pool (centre frame). I'm glad I checked as it turned out to be............
..........this Little Egret.
At Shepherds Dinner (that's what its called honest) 15 Meadow Pipits stopped off for a drink at one of the puddles Here.
Shepherds Dinner Quarry is gradually being back-filled from the waste from the new Bumpers Lane Housing Estate. However it does appear that in the soil were a few seeds of the Giant Viper's Bugloss, Echium pininana. These are 1st year plants and next year they will flower. As I was looking at them, a young family walked past me and the little lad asked his Dad if they were Palm trees. I guess they do look a bit like Palms.
In Broadcroft Quarry Lane one of the three Chiffchaffs here this afternoon.
In the Lower Horse Paddock a Stonechat on one of the Brambles.
Stonechat
Do you know I still haven't seen a White Wagtail on Portland. For one moment here in the Paddock I thought I had. Just a Pied Wagtail I'm afraid.
A short video of the Pied Wagtail having a bathe
