Old Quarry Lane, Wakeham Meadow, Perryfield Quarry Butterfly Reserve, Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church, Church Ope Cove, Penn's Weare, Penn's Copse, Rufus Castle, Bumpers Lane, Broadcroft Quarry Lane, Broadcroft Quarry Butterfly Reserve (West) and Lower Horse Paddock

At long last a sunny start to the day, no rain, but instead a chilly south-westerly breeze coming up the island.

A few highlights at the following locations:

Penns Wood: 1 Chiffchaff

Church Ope Cove: 2 Black Redstart, a male Stonechat, 5 Rock Pipits and a Grey Wagtail

Lower Horse paddock: A pair of Stonechats, 3 Meadow Pipit and 2 Pied Wagtails.

And that was about it, I didn't see, let alone hear, any Long-tailed Tits and the usual posse of Goldcrests. In fact Penns Wood was eerily quiet other than the lone Chiffchaff. Even the tap tap tapping of the female Great Spotted Woodpecker has stopped, and she has been absent for a couple of days now.

At home a Honey Bee was on the Sweet Williams, and apart from the Kelp Flies on the beach was the only other invertebrate I came across.

Here are a few images and videos from today:

Blue seas at the Church Ope Cove today. On the horizon you can just make out one of the Sea King Mark 5 helicopters.

Here it is hovering. More on this helicopter here.

Back to the cove and at the far end under the cliffs was a Black Redstart, and at the southern end where I'm stood was.......

...........this second bird.

And in the middle of the beach were 5 Rock Pipits.

I need to keep an eye out for a Scandinavian Type Rock Pipit. Apparently there have been a few recorded along the south coast in the past week or so.

In the Lower Horse paddock behind the Alessandria Hotel the pair of......

.........Stonechats remain.

This is a Mahonia, and with around 70 species I haven't a clue as to which one this is. What I do know is that it flowers between Late Autumn to Early Spring. Like this one, I have seen many with yellow flowers, though it does come in other colours. This one is at the top of Penns Wood. More on this plant Here.

When I got home and despite the cool conditions, there was a Honey Bee on this Sweet William.

Look at me Dad.

Sadly we wont be going for a walk together tomorrow.........

...........as Ted will be at the Dentist".

One of the best coves on the island.

Just the one ship today. Unfortunately it wasn't showing up on the Marine Traffic Website. It looks like a RFA Vessel, with a couple of helicopters onboard.
