19 Nov 20

Old Quarry Lane, Wakeham Meadow, Wakeham Railway Cuttings, Perryfields Quarry Butterfly Reserve, Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church Grounds and Church Ope Cove.

A bit of an odd day with a right mixture of highlights. The best being a Common Crossbill (Sound Track Below), which flew north over Penns Wood. Other highlights were 2 Wall Lizards basking in the sun in the Church grounds and a Red Admiral along the old Quarry Lane.

The only real big disappointment was the lack of any Long-tailed Tits along my walk. Actually that isn't quite true, there were some around, but not once did I see one. As soon a flock came close they just kept moving off in different direction.

The closest I got was in the Church Grounds, where I met up with Martin Cade (Warden at PBO), we could hear them close-by and it was quite obvious other birds were with them, with brief sightings of Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Great Tit and Blue Tit.

Here are a few sightings from other locations:

Wakeham Railway Cuttings: 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker

Penns Wood: Several Chaffinch, Goldfinches, 1 Goldcrest and 1 Chiffchaff

Church Ope Cove Hut Area: 1 Chiffchaff

Church Ope Cove Beach: 15 Rock Pipits, 2 Pied Wagtails, 1 Grey Wagtails and 3 Wrens.

Out to sea: Hundreds of Gannets, gulls and auks (Razorbills/Guillemots)

Here are a few images and videos from today:

Church Ope Cove looking south

On the beach this afternoon was this male Grey Wagtail. Below are a few videos of it feeding on the beach.

Also here was a male Pied Wagtail, with a 1st Winter close-by.

There was a good number of Rock Pipits here today with 15 noted.

It's no surprise really that the Rock Pipits and wagtails love it here. Just look at those Kelp Flies!!

I might not have seen the Yellow-browed Warbler, Firecrest or any Black Redstarts today, but it's always nice to see a Chiffchaff

Out to sea there were hundreds of Gannetsgulls and even a few auks.

This video has an auk flying from right to left, just above the waves.

There must have been an awful lot of food out there for them.

Just masses of birds

With the sun out, though it wasn't particularly warm...................

....................., it was obviously warm enough for these 2 juvenile Wall Lizards in the Church grounds.

And also sunny enough for this Red Admiral which I came across in Old Quarry Lane.

The look on that face!!!

Well whatever it was earlier, Ted seems happier now, as he checks out the beach.
