The Fleet

It was another trip into Weymouth this afternoon and on the way back I dropped into Ferrybridge again. This time I stuck to the Weymouth side of The Fleet, as I didn't want to get a soaking with the showers I could see approaching from the west.

Main highlight was a Sandwich Tern which headed east over the Fleet into Portland Harbour. Also noted was a Chiffchaff calling from the hedgerow behind me as I took shelter from the 30mph gusts.

An adult Cormorant (left) and a juvenile fly up the Fleet, before........

.......coming into land next to Chesil Beach.

Four other Cormorants on one of the pontoons.

Along the edge of Chesil Beach a Little Egret

On the foreshore you can just about pick out 3 Oystercatchers. Behind them are Ringed Plover, Dunlin and Sanderling all scurrying around on the Sandflats. Whilst flying over the water, one of several Great Black-backed Gulls here today.

A panoramic video of the waders on the sandflats.

Looking west down the Fleet a lone Bar-tailed Godwit

And then looking south again a melee of Black-headed Gulls, Mediterranean Gulls, Herring Gulls and Great Black-backed Gulls.

A "fluffy" Herring Gull with its back to the wind.

Yep that's the way to keep your head out of the wind!!

A Great Black-backed Gull comes into land on the Dorset Wildlife Trusts "Fleet Explorer" moored just off the beach.

Ahh now we know why it's on there. Fresh water to drink.

A last swallow of rain water and then it's........

.............rest time on "Explorers" Roof. More on the Fleet Explorer Here.

There was a loud screech and as I looked up a Sandwich Tern was flying east over the The Fleet towards......

.................Portland Harbour, helped on by that strong westerly. The windsock looks like its had better days.

General Shots
:

The clouds billowing up over the Isle of Portland.

The Sandflats to the south and the "Wild Chesil Centre" centre left.

And looking west along The Fleet with Chesil Beach in the background. The bushes on the right was where the Chiffchaff was.
