Wakeham Wood, Perryfield, Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church, Church Ope Cove, Penns Weare, Penns Copse, Rufus Castle, Mermaid Track, Railway Cuttings, Bottom Combe Quarry and back to Wakeham Wood.

Another good walk this morning a plenty of birds about. Here are the highlights:

Wakeham Wood: 5 Chiffchaff (1 singing), 1 Willow Warbler, 5 Blackcap, 2 Spotted Flycatcher, Sparrowhawk and 2 Swallows overhead

Penns Wood: 1 Chiffchaff and 2 Goldcrest

Church Ope Cove: 18 Rock Pipits, 12 Grey Wagtail and 1 Sparrowhawk

Penns Copse: 1 Blackcap

Mermaid Track: 2 Chiffchaff and Long-tailed Tits

Perryfield: 3 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap and 2 Goldcrest

Bottom Combe Quarry: 4 Chiffchaff (1 singing) and 3 Blackcap

Certainly fewer butterflies about with just 5 Red Admirals, 2 Large Whites, 3 Speckled Woods, 1 Painted Lady and a Comma found.

The same/different Hummingbird Hawk-moth was on one of the Buddleia in Wakeham wood.

Fewer bees, wasps and hoverflies about this morning. Still a few Ivy Bees about, but not as many as recent days.

A lone Bloody-nosed Beetle was trundling along a track on Penns Weare.

..........here at Wakeham Wood have been excellent for migratory birds over the past few days.

Today there were 2 Spotted Flycatchers.

Lots of flies in the Sycamores.

A Spotted Flycatcher hangs on for dear life in the breeze.

Also in the Sycamores a few.........

...........Chiffchaffs.

The buddleia was also alive with Chiffchaff and also this.......

............Hummingbird Hawk-moth.

In the grounds of St Andrew's Church a Comma on a Hemp Agrimony.

It was a good for Dead Head Hoverflies.

Another one and....

........one more.

Not a Dead Head Hoverfly but The Footballer hoverfly (Helophilus pendulus)

There is still an onshore breeze and there is a fair bit of Kelp........

............being washed up on the beach, much to the delight of these............

.........Rock Pipits and the ones below. 





At Rufus Castle the Ivy there is full of hoverflies and Honey Bees like this one.

And its not just the Honey Bees either with good numbers of Ivy Bees on this particular Ivy Plant. Here are a few Ivy Bee shots below.





I've not seen a Blood-nosed Beetle for awhile so it was good to see one trundling along the track on Penns Weare.

Birds Recorded: 2 Sparrowhawk, Herring Gull, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, 2 Swallow, 4 Meadow Pipit, 18 Rock Pipit, 1 Grey Wagtail, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, 10 Blackcap, 15 Chiffchaff, 1 Willow Warbler, 4 Goldcrest, 2 Spotted Flycatcher, Long-tailed Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Wren, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, House Sparrow and Chaffinch.

Reptiles Recorded: Wall Lizard (Podarcis muralis)

Butterflies Recorded: Large White, Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Painted Lady and Comma

Moths Recorded: 1 Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum)

Bees Recorded: Honey Bees (Apis mellifera) and Ivy Bee (Colletes hederae)

Wasps Recorded: German Wasp (Vespula germanica) and Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris)

Hoverflies Recorded: Dead Head Hoverfly (Myathropa florea), Hornet Mimic Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria), The Footballer (Helophilus pendulus), Common Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax) and Tapered Drone Fly (Eristalis pertinax)

Flies Recorded: Kelp Fly (Coelopa frigida)

Bugs and Beetles Recorded: Bloody-nosed Beetle (Timarcha tenebricosa)

Ships Today


This is the British Ship "RFA Argus" coming back into Portland Harbour. On the flight deck are 3 Apache Helicopters, presumably the same ones we saw yesterday from our fishing trip in Weymouth Bay. More on this vessel Here
