Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church, Church Ope Cove, Penns Weare, Penns Copse and Rufus Castle

Autumn certainly arrived today with cloudy cool conditions and a fine drizzle as I walked around my local patch. Main highlights were 2 Blackcaps and a Chiffchaff in Penns Wood and another Chiffy at the back of the cove.

The Rock Pipits on the beach numbered 8 today, and joining hem was a juvenile Pied Wagtail. Also here a Cormorant, Herring Gull and a Wood Pigeon. The latter feeding in amongst the boulders at the waters edge.

Flying along the shoreline were several Herring Gulls and a Fulmar. Whilst overhead a Yellow Wagtail heading heading south.

With the cloudy cool conditions the butterfly count was zero as was the bee count. Just a handful of hoverflies on the flowering Ivy (alongside the steps between the church and the cove), with Dead Head Hoverflies, and singles of Hornet Mimic Hoverfly and Lesser Hornet Mimic Hoverfly.

A few beetles about with 5 Bloody-nosed Beetles noted, including a pair mating.

Here are a few images from this morning:

The grounds of St Andrew's Church and in the background the "scrubland" where today there were 2 Blackcaps and a Chiffchaff.

Another Chiffchaff, this one behind the huts at Church Ope Cove.

At the cove one of the 8 Rock Pipits, with this.....................

..........one having a good clean up.

Quite a few Herring Gulls along this stretch of coast today, with this one stopping off at the cove.

There aren't many places you won't see a Wood Pigeon, Gardens, Parks, City Centres, Farmland and by the looks of it, on beaches, foraging around the rocks and boulders on the shoreline.

A pair of Bloody-nosed Beetles mating.

Here another scurries across the track.

And here you can see how it gets its name, as it secretes a red liquid from its mouth as part of its defence mechanism.
