Old Quarry Lane and Wakeham Meadows

It was an early evening walk today, and even at 7:00pm there was still plenty to see other than butterflies.

Main highlights were 20+ House Martins drifting south over Wakeham and a very vocal Chiffchaff.

...........through a bit of a moult.

None. It was 7:00pm


Moths Recorded:
Brimstone Moth (Opisthograptis luteolata)
Common Nettle-tap moth (Anthophila fabriciana) - Most likely

On the unripe Blackberries was this presumed Common Nettle-tap moth (Anthophila fabriciana)

Common Carder Bumblebee (Bombus pascuorum)
Honey Bee (Apis mellifera)
Red-tailed Bumblebee (Bombus lapidarius)

Buff-tailed Bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) on Common Ragwort (Jacobaea vulgaris)

Also on the Common Ragwort was this Common Carder Bumblebee (Bombus pascuorum)

I've noticed that Common Carder Bumblebees have great difficulty in exiting the flowers of the Large Bindweed (Calystegia silvatica). More often or not they tumble out!!

A male Long Hoverfly (Sphaerophoria scripta) and..........

..........another male with its wings closed.

A probably the commonest hoverfly on Portland a Marmalade Hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus)
