Portland Castle Beach

Next stop was the beach at Portland Castle. There was a very strong and freezing cold north-easterly coming straight across Portland Harbour and into the bay here.

What the wind did though, was to drive in around 45 plus Red-breasted Mergansers close-in to the beach. As I was watching them, a lone Turnstone flew onto the rocks to my right.

Birds Recorded:
Cormorant
Shag
45+ Red-breasted Merganser
1 Turnstone

Portland Marina

Having left the beach, I headed to the marina where I have recently been given permission to wander around the jetty's, to photograph the wildlife here.

Highlights here, were close up views of the sea birds on the water and the breakwater surrounding the marina.

Birds Recorded:
Cormorant
Shag
2 Grey Heron
5 Red-breasted Merganser
2 Oystercatcher
Black-headed Gull
Mediterranean Gull
Herring Gull
Great Black-backed Gull
Carrion Crow

The majority of birds here are Cormorants, with a few Shags in amongst them. On the far right Great Black-backed Gulls.

A bit closer in and the birds in the foreground and just to the right of it are Shags. The others are Cormorants.

A Shag looking straight down the lens on my camera. Behind it is a Cormorant.

Sat in the centre of the Cormorants and Shags is a Grey Heron

Here it is again with a Shag on the right.

Three Red-breasted Mergansers coming into land.

A 3rd Winter Herring Gull

So what have we here. From left to right:- back left an adult Great Black-backed Gull, then a Shag with that long thin beak, next another adult Great Black-backed Gull, then a Cormorant with front left a 1st Winter Great Black-backed Gull.
