Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church, Church Ope Cove, Church Ope Cove Wood, Penn's Weare, Penn's Copse, Rufus Castle, The Cuttings Quarry and Mermaid Track

Today was a very overcast day, but it certainly wasn't cold. The sun tried to get through the cloud cover, but we only had a few bright spells.

Main highlight today was coming across two Hornet Mimic Hoverflies, just below the grounds of St Andrew's Church. Also about were 2 Chiffchaffs calling along the Mermaid Track and a Blackcap in Penns Wood.

Mammals Recorded:
Bunny

Birds Recorded:
Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Stock Dove, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Rock Pipit, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, 1 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Wren, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Linnet and Goldfinch

I'm not surprised this Robin looks a bit worse for wear. It's been a tough breeding season especially with the mixed bag of weather we have had this Spring and Summer.

Reptiles Recorded:
Wall Lizard

Despite the cloudy conditions there were a few Wall Lizards about.

Is it just me or are they all trying to stare me out.

This one doesn't seem to bothered though.

Butterflies Recorded:
Dingy Skipper, Small Skipper, Lulworth Skipper, Large Skipper, Large White, Speckled Wood, Ringlet, Meadow Brown, Marbled White, Red Admiral and Common Blue

This spot is just east of Penn's Copse and at the moment is my best butterfly spot on my walks. The following are all the ones I have seen here apart from the Large White.

And another view of it.

There is no buff colour between the white tip and black band, so that rules out Buff-tailed Bumblebee and there is a thin white-line in the black band on the abdomen, which having looked it up in my new book "Bumblebees - An introduction", appears to be a male White-tailed Bumblebee (Bombus lucorum)

Hoverflies Recorded:
Marmalade Hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus), Long Hoverfly (Sphaerophoria scripta), Hornet Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria), Thick-legged hoverfly (Syritta pipiens)

Even from a distance of 100 metres or so Ted has spotted "Dave" the coastal path groundsman. Ted knows him well, as Dave always has a few doggy treats on him.

A quick look to see where I am and then he was off again.
