An afternoon spent Mackerel fishing around The Hood and in Balaclava Bay. Quite a few Mackerel about and it was great to let the small ones return to fight another day.
And it wasn't just the Mackerel about but we saw at least 3 Barrel Jellyfish and a couple of smaller jellyfish. Unfortunately the photo I took of one of the smaller ones didn't do it any justice.
Whenever you are fishing you are never to far away from a inquisitive gull and at one stage we had around 20 Herring Gulls and 5 Great Black-backed Gulls sitting jut off the stern waiting for a freebie.
A Hoverfly sp. was on-board for a few minutes and a small Bumblebee flew over the sea from the direction of Lulworth and was seen heading for Portland.
The miss of the day was a small shrimp-like creature which I thought was an insect in trouble on the surface and as I leaned over to scoop it up, it dived down into 65 feet of water. We will never know!
Here are a few images from this afternoon:
The Hood from Balaclava Bay
Nicodemus Knob on Portland from Balaclava Bay. The purpose of this landmark is unknown. More on this Pillar Here.
One of Great Black-backed Gulls comes for a nose.
As did this Herring Gull.
So inquisitive.
A Barrel Jellyfish, one of 3 seen drifting pass.
This photo doesn't do this jellyfish any justice whatsoever. But those inner circles were a bright mauve colour.
We weren't the only ones out fishing. Three in a boat bobbing about.
Unfortunately I can't find any info ion this sailing vessel as it left Portland Harbour and headed south.
