Wakeham

Another glorious sunny day here on Portland and another visit to the meadows opposite the cottage.

The number of Marbled Whites and Meadow Browns are just starting to drop off, but the number of Gatekeepers and Ringlets seem to be increasing.

Quite a few moths about with Six-Spot Burnets, Garden Grass-veneers and a Silver Y all seen.

Unsurprisingly an Emperor Dragonfly was seen hawking down the track looking for butterflies.

New for me on Portland was a Parasitic Wasp (Gasteruption jaculator)

Here are a few images from today:

A Six-Spot Burnet Moth with a small bee coming in fast above it.

The Six-Spot Burnet on a Common Knapweed, Centaurea nigra

A Silver Y and..........

...........a very flighty one at that.

One of the many Garden Grass-veneers in the meadow.

The track leading back to Wakeham. On the right Wakeham Wood.

Along the track a Meadow Brown and...................

...........several Gate Keepers now appearing.

A Marbled White.

Here it is again with wings closed.

A Large Meadow Mining Bee on a Knapweed.

This is a Long Hoverfly.

Another hoverfly, this one a Dead Head Fly

This is a Parasitic wasp, Gasteruption jaculator and..........

..........and a first for me on Portland.

On the same umbellifer were these two flies.

A couple of days ago I came across a similar looking fly to the one on the left, which I was told initially was a Dexisoma caninum. However......

...........I have now been told it is one of the Solieria species of flies, of which there are several similar looking species. Not sure what the one on the right is, but I will endeavour to find out.

And when I got home there was a Brown-tail Moth in the Conservatory. A beautiful looking moth but absolutely loathed by many Portlanders, because of the "itchy" caterpillars.
