Southwell

Good old twitter. I was just checking my phone when a tweet came through from Martin Cade to say that there was a Buff-breasted Sandpiper in a field, just 400 metres down from Southwell on the left of Portland Bill Road Here. I think I'm going to like living here, as within 5 minutes I was watching yet another cracking American vagrant.

A few images here.

A few people gather to see the Buff-breasted Sandpiper

Fantastic views of yet another American vagrant

This pretty little wader searches for food by sight, standing still and then making short run forward to capture prey, picking up insects and other items from surface of ground.

Back in its native country it is commonly found in areas of short grass when on migration.

Even though this bird is on the wrong side of the Atlantic it has found the horse field with short grass very much to its liking.

Same bird different light conditions.

Apologies for the wind noise, but then if it wasn't for the gale force conditions I wouldn't have videoed this lovely american wader.

One of the magnificent looking Ravens on the island.

A quick trip into Weymouth this morning and "fortunately" the slow traffic along Portland Beach Road afforded great views of 2 Bar-tailed Godwits and 6 Mediterranean Gulls up against the railings at almost High Water. On the way back the sandbar was covered and there was no sign of them. Further along a Kestrel was trying to hover in the gale force wind.
