Tout Quarry
Somewhere different today and looking back at last years records I actually visited Tout Quarry on 27 Jun Here, when I recorded my first ever Grayling butterfly. Unfortunately if there were any around today they were all taking shelter from gale force wind blowing across the island.
It might have been warm, but the wind put paid to any good butterfly counts and the best I could do was 1 Large White, 2 Speckled Wood, 8 Meadow Brown, 5 Marbled White, 4 Red Admiral and 1 Painted Lady.
Even finding birds was difficult as all you hear was the wind, but I did record 2 Peregrines, 1 Kestrel, 1 Swift, 2 Blackbirds, a Song Thrush singing away deep inside a bush and a pair of Linnets.
New for the year were several Common Red Soldier Beetles and the only other invertebrates seen were 2 Dock Bugs and a 7-Spot Ladybird.
Just the 1 hoverfly seen a Pied Hoverfly.
Also noted were lots of Pyramid Orchids and a few new plants for my Portland list they were: Biting Stonecrop (Sedum acre), Wild Marjoram (Origanum vulgare) and Wild Thyme (Thymus polytrichus).
Here are a few images from this morning, including a few scenic shots looking into Portland Harbour and beyond.
