Wakeham

Eventually the sun came out after a wet miserable morning and it was off for my walk around the meadows and hedgerows at the back of Wakeham Here.

My outbound walk didn't reveal too much as the sun had literally just come out, but as my walk evolved so more and more insects started to appear.

Main highlights were two new insects for me a Potter Wasp (Odynerus melanocephalus) and a Hoverfly (Epistrophe grossulariae), a Tachinids Fly (Thelaira nigripes) and a  Large Rose Sawfly (Arge pagana)

Here are a few images from my walk:

From the main gate at Wakeham in the far distance you come to this........

...........gate here. You can either go through it or walk along the fence line to the meadow on the right of the fence.

Today I went through the gate and as I did so a juvenile Dunnock landed on a post close to me.

If you go through gate there is this meadow here...........

..........or alternatively going along the fence line brings you out here. Both locations have amazing wildlife and today I came across the following.

A Meadow Brown. Its not often you see them with their wings open.

A Speckled Wood.

A Garden Grass-veneer

Myelois circumvoluta, Thistle Ermine

Hoverfly, Syrphus sp.

This is a male Epistrophe grossulariae hoverfly and another new one for me on Portland.

The Footballer, Helophilus pendulus

From left to right - Marmalade Hoverfly, Large Rose Sawfly and Swollen-thighed Beetle

A closer view of the Large Rose Sawfly

White-tailed Bumble Bee, Bombus lucorum

As far as I can make it out this is a Potter Wasp and most likely a Odynerus melanocephalus. A new species for me on Portland.

An Ichneumon Wasp sp.

A Common Green Shieldbug

Swollen-thighed Beetle

This fly is a member of the Tachinidae family of flies and..................

.................is a Thelaira nigripes.

A Flesh Fly, Sarcophaga sp.

And there are still Brown-tail Moth caterpillars around.
