Wakeham

Another very warm sunny day, albeit very windy with a strong easterly blowing across the island. This morning I had another walk across the road to the Wakeham Wood track and meadows.

Main highlights were 6 Painted Lady's and 5 Marbled White butterflies. Also seen were 2 Red Admirals, a pair of Common Blues, 20+ Meadow Browns and 3 Ringlets. The latter my first this year.

Just the one moth seen today a Garden Grass-veneer.

Also noted was a spider which looked very much like a crab spider and turned out to be a House Crab Spider (Philodromus dispar). A new one for me on Portland.

Here are a few images from this morning:

The track from Wakeham main road looking west.

A Long Hoverfly - Sphaerophoria scripta

A lucky shot as it takes off.

A Syrphus hoverfly sp.

One of two Red Admirals on the buddleia along the track.

Also a very tatty Painted Lady.

And another tatty one on a Privet.

A Meadow Brown..............

............and a pair mating.

A female Common Blue

And a "faded" male Common Blue.

Apart from 2 Marbled Whites fluttering about it the wind, the rest were hunkered down in the grass.

And another sheltering from the wind.

A Dock Bug

This appears to be a House Crab Spider - Philodromus dispar

Self-heal, Prunella vulgaris

And a close-up of the flower head.
