Day 11.

Carrer Can Vauma Wildlife Corridor

It was back to the Wildlife Corridor Here, to have a more thorough look as to what we missed yesterday.

Main highlight was a Great Crested Grebe to add to my Mallorca list.

Other highlights were 3 Swallowtail Butterflies and several new plants to identify later.

A Great Banded Furrow Bee (Halictus scabiosae) on scabious sp. with a female Swollen-thighed Beetle (Oedemera nobilis) below.


Wasps, Ichneumon Wasps, Parasitic Wasps and Gall Wasps Recorded:
Mirror Orchid Wasp (Dasyscolia ciliata)
European Paper Wasp (Polistes dominula)

This stunning insect is a Mirror Orchid Wasp (Dasyscolia ciliata) and also goes by the name of Scolid Wasp. More on this wasp here.

Hidden in this plant......

............is a wasp nest............

..............belonging to the European Paper Wasp (Polistes dominula). And there wasn't just one wasp.........

.............but two. It is unlike this species to nest in amongst................

................... a plant, usually it's in various locations, including shaded areas under roofs etc. More on this wasp here.

Scarab Beetle (Hoplia dilutipes)

A pair of White Spotted Rose Chafer (Oxythyrea funesta) and two male Yellow-legged Thick-legged Flower Beetle (Oedemera flavipes) below. The latter a new beetle for me and very similar to the Swollen-thighed Beetle (Oedemera nobilis)

This is a Bermuda Buttercup (Oxalis pre-capri) and goes by several other names such as African Wood-Sorrel, Bermuda Sorrel, Buttercup Oxalis, Cape Sorrel, English Weed, Goat’s-foot, Sourgrass, Soursob and Soursop. The name buttercup is a misnomer as it is actually a sorrel and not related to buttercups at all. More on this plant here.

This is Castor Bean (Ricinus communis) and is native to the Mediterranean region, including Mallorca. It is a fast-growing shrub producing seeds which are poisonous. More on this plant here.

This is Sea Lavender (limonium sinuatum) and.........

..........is a common coastal plant found in Mallorca.........

..........Despite its name it is not related to lavender.
