Chesil Cove

With Storm Amy throwing her weight around today, with wind gusts up to 50mph, it was pointless having a walk around Wakeham, so instead it was down to Chesil Cove to see if anything had been blown in.

There were plenty of "rafts" with a mix of around 30 Black-headed Gulls, Herring Gulls and Great Black-backed Gulls checking them out. There were possibly 2 Mediterranean Gulls in amongst them, but the strength of the wind made it extremely difficult to spot any others.

About three breakers out, there was a very small dolphin/porpoise, possibly a deceased youngster, which caught the attention of the larger gulls.

Whilst on the beach, the dead sheep washed up around the 16 Sep, was still attracting the attention of the gulls and Ravens, with very little left of it.

The only other bird seen on the beach was a Rock Pipit, which decided it had had enough of being battered by the spray and wind, and eventually flew inland!!

An adult Herring Gull flying over the frozen sea at Chesil Cove. Well it does look like at first glance. It is of course the "froth" from the waves crashing onto the beach.

Here on the far left is all that remains of the dead sheep from a few weeks back. And on the right a juvenile Great Black-backed Gull fends of one of the resident Ravens which is interested in finishing off the carcass.
