Sandsfoots Castle and The Fleet

Not a place I normally visit, but with 2 Slavonian Grebes and 8 Black-necked Grebes reported here this morning, I thought it was worth a visit this afternoon. Sadly not a sign of any of the aforementioned. Only birds of note on the very low tide were 2 Great Crested Grebes and 2 Red-breasted Mergansers.

Elsewhere along the shoreline were 2 Little Egrets, my first of the year, several Herring Gulls and 2 Oystercatchers. Whilst  by the car park there was a large flock of 50+ Goldfinch and Greenfinches. The latter always good to see. In the bush next to me a Chiffchaff was feeding in amongst the brambles.

Having dipped here on the Slavonians I drove back to The Fleet where a Curlew dropped in on the exposed mud flats Here.

Here are a few poor quality images in the failing light.

A very bleak view across Portland Harbour from Sandsfoot Castle.

This Little Egret is my first sighting of one this year. This bird was feeding in the shallows just off the beach when.................

................. this "intruder" on the left moved in on its patch.

Two Little Egrets and a bit of a dispute as to whose patch it is!!

At The Fleet in appalling light conditions as the rain began to fall a Curlew dropped in.

Its there somewhere the Curlew!!

Apologies for the poor quality image, but I did at least capture this Red-breasted Merganser catch a largish fish.

Birds Recorded: 2 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Little Egret, 2 Red-breasted Merganser, 1 Sparrowhawk, Oystercatcher, Dunlin, Curlew, Black-headed Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Starling, Carrion Crow, Chiffchaff, 50+ Goldfinch and 7 Greenfinch.
