Penns Wood and Church Ope Cove
The weather forecast was for the rain to clear this afternoon, which I thought it had as I headed out on my walk. As I left the cottage, the sun was out and the clouds were clearing. However if you live on an island that is stuck out in the English Channel, then you have to remember that sometimes when the weather might look good, those coastal squally showers can and do appear as if by magic. I got absolutely soaked even with waterproofs on.
My first stop was in a sunny Penns Wood, where a Chiffchaff and Goldcrest were both calling. However as I made my way down to Church Ope Cove via St Andrew's Church a few spots of rain began to fall.
In fact within a few minutes the visibility across the sea went from a couple of miles to about 100 metres. There was no chance of any photos other than the ones I took of the ships and the cove which I took from the grounds of St Andrew's Church earlier.
So with the camera safely in the bag it was quick scan around the beach before the rain hit in earnest. Main highlights were both the 2 Black Redstarts, the Stonechat, a single Chiffchaff behind the beach huts, 20+ Rock Pipits and both the Grey & Pied Wagtails.
Other than that there was a Kestrel taking refuge on the cliff face below Rufus Castle and a Cormorant fishing a few metres of the beach.
Just the one photo
It was hard to imagine than within a few minutes of me taking this photo the heavens had opened and the clear visibility seen here disappeared down to around 100 metres.
Birds Recorded: 1 Cormorant, 1 Kestrel, Herring Gull, 1 Great Black-backed Gull, Wood Pigeon, 20+ Rock Pipit, 1 Pied Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, Magpie, Wren, Dunnock, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Stonechat, 2 Black Redstart, Robin, Blackbird, Great Tit, Blue Tit, House Sparrow and Chaffinch.
I just managed to photo this Vehicles Carrier "Glovis Supreme" flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, before it and the ship below disappeared in the squally shower. This vessel is on its way from East London, South Africa to Bremerhaven, Denmark. More on this vessel Here.
And this is the Vehicles Carrier "Schelde Highway" fling the flag of Panama. Its on its way from Dublin to Zeebrugge. More on this vessel Here.
