Church Ope and Pennsylvania Castle woods

It looks like February is going to be one of those very quiet months on Portland. Not a lot to report on my walk today and the only highlight was a single Firecrest in Penns Wood.

Here are few images from this afternoon:

A record shot of a Firecrest in Penns Wood

I had a bit more luck with this Goldcrest which gave me lots of poses.

Head on

A bit closer

And even one upside down!!

A Herring Gull was the only bird on the beach at Church Ope Cove.

A male Great Tit

The "Quarter Bell" passes Church Ope Cove

The view looking south.

And now how to confuse your dogs!!!!!

These orange arrows have suddenly popped up around the island. Ted's not sure which way to go, though Benji seems to want to go right.
They are all along the SW Coast path

On rocks here and.....

.......and here. Most odd!!

Day 7 and the female Blackcap is still enjoying the suet pellets. on the feeder.

The suet pellets are a big hit with this female Blackcap.

Blackcaps are members of the warbler family and during the Spring and Summer months feed predominantly on insects. As Autumn approaches they would would normally be getting ready to migrate to Africa. However a few birds do over-winter here, especially from the continent, and their diet changes from insects to berries and fruit, and in the case of this female Blackcap suet.
Note: More on over-wintering Blackcaps Here.

At the back of the cottage, just off Bumpers Lane, a digger has dug out all the berry-laden Cotoneasters which the over-wintering thrushes and Blackcaps had been feeding on. The company that sanctioned this are clueless and have forced birds onto pastures new. It's bit like the area to the south of Bumpers Lane, the land was cleared and flattened in preparation for a new housing estate and now it transpires that planning permission hasn't been granted. So what are they doing to this mound, is it being removed for these proposed houses Here, but how is that possible if planning permission hasn't been given!!!!!
