Wakeham Railway Cuttings, Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church, Church Ope Cove, Church Ope Cove Wood, Penn's Weare, Penn's Copse, Rufus Castle and Bumpers Lane

With rain forecast for late morning and continuing throughout the day, I set the alarm for silly o'clock so that I could get a walk in before it arrived. Well I managed to get up and as I set off it was even sunny for awhile. I got back around 9:00am just as the rain began to fall. Perfect timing.

My last walk through Penns Wood to the Cove was back on the 21st April, and unsurprisingly everything looked a lot greener today.

No real highlights and no butterflies either, but then it was pretty early in the day.

Ted:

He does like sitting on the cliff watching the world go by.

Whoops!! Ted's snagged a nasty bramble and can't look. I can't blame him. Fortunately it was easy enough to remove.

Barleycrates Lane, West Cliff, Reap Lane Barn, The Hump (Avalanche Road) and Thumb Lane

Well today I opted for a walk on Portland's west side, in the hope of coming across a Spotted Flycatcher. Along my route there were several places I have seen them before, but today there were none.

However I did find 2 female Pied Flycatchers at The Hump, where there was also a Blackcap and a Chiffchaff.

Other birds of note were 2 Swifts over the West Cliffs, a Sedge Warbler at Thumb Lane and a Wheatear close to Barleycrates Lane

Just the one Wheatear seen. And a very distant one at that.

This male Blackbird was in excellent voice at Reap Lane Barns

This female Pied Flycatcher and another close by were busy catching insects in the Sycamores. This one has spotted something above.

A tilt of the head and then.........

..............head back.

False alarm.

A Carrion Crow keeps a wary eye on me and Ted as we walk along the coastal path.

A few juvenile Starlings and adults searching for insects in one of the horse paddocks along my walk.
