20 Jul 19

Penns Wood, St Andrew's Church, Penns Weare. Penns Copse, Rufus Castle, The Cuttings Quarry and The Mermaid Track.

After yesterdays washout, it was good to get out of the cottage this afternoon and have a leisurely walk around Church Ope Cove. Main highlight was watching a few Chalk Hill Blues along Penns Weare and The Cuttings Quarry.

Unfortunately and despite the warm sunny conditions, it was very windy and difficult to photograph any butterflies, as most were struggling to fly in the windy conditions.

Other highlights were a Common Whitethroat along the Mermaid Track and at the other end of the track closest to the old Mermaid Pub was a Pellucid Hoverfly.

Here are a few images from this afternoon:

Church Ope Cove

Over Penns Weare a Kestrel hovers over a Carrion Crow.

A pair of Chalk Hill Blues mating, in extremely windy conditions. I probably should have used a faster shutter speed than 1/800th second.

And the only "settled" Gatekeeper I found in the wind.

Not a brilliant photo but a shot of a Six-Spot Burnet Moth.

About Here, along the old railway track, adjacent to Jubilee Close, Dawn came across these Cinnabar Moth caterpillars on their favourite food source - Ragwort.
