Penns Wood, Church Ope Cove and Rufus Castle

Not sure what the weather was doing today as the sun was out first thing, then it clouded over and then a large area of blue sky appeared to be heading our way, but never quite made it.

Main highlights today were the hundreds of auks presumably Razorbills and Guillemots far out to sea and heading up and down the island towards Weymouth Bay and back. In amongst them were a couple of Gannets.

Meanwhile at the cove the overwintering Black Redstart, Stonechat, Grey Wagtail and Pied Wagtail were all present. Also on the beach here were 6 Rock Pipits, 5 Wrens and that Herring Gull again.

Elsewhere 2 Goldcrests in Penns Wood and several Goldfinches by Rufus Castle, where there was a small flock of Long-tailed Tits.

A few very poor quality photos from today:

A very quiet Church Ope Cove

91 steps down to the intersection for the beach and St Andrew's Church. Not sure how many steps from there to the beach though!

The Black Redstart is appreciating the quiet beach.

As is the Stonechat and........

.......Grey Wagtail.

Always Rock Pipits here, with 6 today.

And not forgetting the Wrens, must have been a good 5 or 6 here today.

The "resident" Herring Gull. Not sure what he's waiting for, but he's always here.

Way out to sea and mean a long way, which is why the imagery is naff, but..........

......there is definitely evidence of auks..........

............presumably Razorbills or Guillemots or both of course, moving up and down the Portland coastline.

Also about 2 Gannets........

.........the second bird.

And finally all the Snowdrops are in flower at the top of Penns Wood.

Birds Recorded: 2 Gannet, Cormorant, Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Razorbill/Guillemot, Wood Pigeon, 6 Rock Pipit, 1 Pied Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Wren, Dunnock, 2 Goldcrest, 1 Stonechat, 1 Black Redstart, Robin, Blackbird, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Long-tailed Tit, House Sparrow, Chaffinch and Goldfinch.
