Bumpers Lane, Church Ope Cove and Penns Wood

Yet another one of those days, the sun looked as if it would stay out, but then a huge blanket of cloud passed overhead and we ended up with a really dull afternoon. However the day didn't disappoint especially at Church Ope Cove where there are now 2 Black Redstarts. Its quite obvious that the "resident" overwintering bird wasn't impressed and spent most of its time trying to chase off the newbie.

Also about were the overwintering Stonechat, Grey Wagtail, Pied Wagtail and a Chiffchaff.

The Rock Pipits numbered 12 today and the "resident" Herring Gull was back on the beach. Still plenty of Wrens flitting about with a few now singing.

Here are a few images from a grey day, hence the poor quality images.:

The hotspot today with 2 Black Redstarts, a Stonechat and a Chiffchaff all in this hut and bank area.

From the top of Penns Weare a record shot of one of the Black Redstarts, just in case they flew off before I got down the steps.

Here is the other..........

.........and the overwintering Stonechat.

A bit closer to one of the Black Redstarts.

You can see how the "redstart" gets its name as it flew up behind the Stonechat. Start is the old word for tail.

The Stonechat poses again for the camera.

A record shot of the Chiffchaff behind the huts.

Hiding in amongst the beach pebbles the Grey Wagtail.

Not so the Pied Wagtail who is definitely King of the Beach.

One of the 12 Rock Pipits here today.

And who else but the "resident" Herring Gull.

And finally a mystery plant to ID.........

............which appears to be coming out in flower................

Certainly an unusual looking plant which is growing at the top of Penns Wood. Turns out it is a Euphorbia characias ssp. wulfenii and goes by the common names of  Albanian Spurge and Mediterranean Spurge. More on this plant here and here.
